County Approves Bike Trail Plan

Bucks County's Bicycle Task Force now will help municipalities implement the county-wide comprehensive plan.

 

Imagine being able to hop on a ten-speeder in Bristol and work your way around Bensalem, up to Newtown, through Doylestown, detouring into Warminster and eventually ending up in Quakertown, all while traveling on either shared roadways or bike trails. 

This vision of an interconnected network of bike trails that weaves a web all around Bucks County gained the unanimous approval of the Bucks County Commissioners Wednesday morning.

"This would be a great asset for Bucks," said Rob Loughery, who was re-appointed chairman of the commissioners on Monday.

With the plan approved, it's now time to implement it throughout the county's 54 municipalities. That's where a Bucks County Task Force hopes to step in.

Formed in 2008, the 10 members of the Bucks County Bicycle Task Force formulated a comprehensive plan for a county-wide network of bike paths and facilities that would make bike travel around Bucks easier and more attractive.

According to the 200+ page master plan, the county came up with the blueprint, but it's up to individual townships or boroughs to put the pieces together at their own reasonable speed.

"To be able to achieve this long range vision," the plan says, "the foundation for the overall bicycle network will need to be developed by the local municipalities through defining and implementing their own municipal or multi-municipal bicycle master plan."

The members of the task force developed a toolkit, or guidelines and resources for the municipalities and their planning commissions to use while formulating development plans. Wider shoulders, more shared use signs and smoother paths are just a few of the recommendations that city planners are advised to keep in mind.

The trail plan created 12 major spines, or paths, that would serve as the backbone for the network, with smaller subdivisions, or spokes, sprinkled along the way. Of those 12, the task force identified three that they feel are high-priority projects:

  • A Doylestown/New Hope Connector that will provide a link between the end of the new Route 202 Parkway and New Hope, creating a cross country bike route in Central Bucks.
  • A Levittown/Woodbourne Connector that would link the Levittown and Woodbourne SEPTA stations, providing a critical bicycle route for Lower Bucks County.
  • Quakertown Trail which would connect to Lehigh County through the Saucon Rail Trail.

The task force also plans to forge partnerships with organizations that can help educate the public and generate excitement and interest in the bike trail network.

The study cites several bike groups that already exist in and around the county, including the Central Bucks Bicycle Club and the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. The economic, environmental and physical advantages of the activity has helped create more interest in recreational bicycling, the study says.

"If bicycling is to become widespread throughout Bucks County," the study says, "a move must be made to make the County a more bicycle friendly environment, including improved and additional facilities, additional bicycle amenities and increased education and safety opportunities."

Shared roadways? Who are they kidding. The "shared" roads are dangerous when you're in a car. You gotta be pretty brave (or stupid) to take a bicycle on them.

You must be one of those aggressive drivers I so frequently see speeding, running lights, not looking, texting while driving, etc. Slow down and show consideration for others!

Fran - you might not like cyclists, but we have every right to be on the roads. there is a law to pass with 4 feet between bike and car. we are typically not doing anything dangerous, we find riding a blast and for some a means of transportation which saves use of gas and other natural resources.
before you tell us we are idiots, you may want to just review your own actions and try biking to work one day. then you may understand the need for safer options.

The spandex crowd could use a bit more o2 laced blood to the brain. As is evdent to anyone driving down a country road with two IDIOTS riding abreast in front of them for a few miles.
I am a cyclist and Im tempted to run them in the ditch myself at times.
And the new 202 bypass forget a bout it !!!! what moron layed out that death trap? And what IDIOTwould use the 2 bike lanes when a 8ft wide paved trail runs the entire length of it. I will feel bad for the poor sod that hits one as thay make a right turn on to bristol and has to live with that for the rest of thair life .......( Its time to loosen up the spandex and think clearly )

Carlos, as a fellow cyclist, you should be aware that two-abreast is entirely legal and, in many cases, optimal for safety reasons. Sure, I'd take a bit more o2-laced blood, but that's why we ride now, isn't it?

Your characterization of fellow cyclists as idiots...well, that tells me just about all I need to know about you as a cyclist and human being. Stick to bi-pedalling the woods my friend.

That said, you are spot-on about the bypass. Spot-on.

I wish the bike lane on the 202 bypass was wider but it's actually safer than using the trail. This is especially true for cars that are turning across the trail. I've had several close calls from motorists not yielding to me in the crosswalk with a walk signal when riding the trail but not one when using the bike lane where you are in the motorist's field of view.

I'm saddened and frustrated by those who can't express their disagreement without characterizing those they disagree with as "idiots" and "morons". No surprise those folks are the same motorists who are also unable to show cyclists the respect and legal rights we are due on the road. The cyclists' comments are insult free - except Mr. Depp, who may think he's a cyclist but no cyclist would ever make such a comment as he did. Did you motorists forget your kindergarten lessons: 1. Be nice 2. Show some patience 3. First, seek to understand then to be understood. One might conclude you are all VERY important people with no time to spare: emergency surgeons, firefighters, EMTs? Your lives and activities must be monumentally important since you can't bother to slow down for 5 or 10 seconds to safely pass a cyclist or two.

That's generally all it takes, you know. 5 - 10 seconds: see the cyclist > slow down a little > check the oncoming lane for oncoming traffic to ensure there is room to pass > cross the yellow as much as is needed to give the cyclist the LEGALLY REQUIRED 4 FEET OF CLEARANCE > Go on your merry way. 5 to 10 seconds really isn't so much.

As to riding two abreast, we are actually significantly safer the closer we ride to the center of the lane so if you motorists can choke down your road rage with a second of patience, once we know you're behind us we'll move to help you safely pass as soon as we can.

My experience is that bikers do not feel obligated to move over and just wait till you cross over the double yellow to pass them. The roads in my neighborhood have no shoulders and are very dangerous for two cars sometimes, and having a group of 10+ bikers only exacerbates the problem.......stick to the tow path!

Attn:cyclist please be alert for oversized loads, I Drive oversize loads throughout the county and always tap the horn to alert the riders that we are coming,We always need the whole road and shoulder , Most riders will pull of into a driveway and let us by. Others just keep going. Wear Bright safety clothing and move to a safe place far off the road when you see an oversize load. We have special permits and the right to be on the road just as anyone else. Be Safe Enjoy your sport!

Frank, I know most of the riders in our group ride single file, try to stay off major roads, and stick to back roads but when it is necessary to ride on a more heavily trafficked road it is nice to know there are drivers that will work together with us to make both driving and cycling safer in general. So thank you for the warning when you approach.

And to you Mike my apologies not all of us are idiots but the few that are speak volumes for the rest of us (the douch bags know who thay are) Thay are the same ones that run the hammer lane 5 under and wont yield even though you flash your lights. I do pedal in the woods as well as the road that makes me a bad person? Thing is I dont during deer season just not a safe or smart thing to do even though I have every legal right to be there. When I ride for exercise or pleasure and I dont ride to work as I doubt in reality many of us do I try to pick rides that are safe and challenging and there are lots of them in bucks that dont invite risk. My family deserves no less of me As for the paved trail VS the bike lane time will tell. I say the first fatality given the same visual profile will be the cyclists in the bike lane not the woman pushing the baby stroller in the crosswalk. Thay call them blind spots for a reason. Oh by the way Jole I think I read your book wasnt it called YO LOOK AT ME--->>> no over here

Just a thought If ya want to ride with the big guys and have all the advantages of the road than perhaps its time to carry the nessary insurance , regestration , and pass a test as it pertains to biking.
If I have to share a roadway with you you should pay for its upkeep and be prepared to pay for any violation or accident you cause

Jane I don' agree with your facts. most monies for biking comes from federal grants. these grants are funded by a gasoline tax, conveniently named transportation enhancements, or tea. these monies are taken out of each states federal highway funds.
So If only around 1 -2% of the Pa residents ride a bike as their means of transportation, they are basically getting a free ride because they do not purchase gasoline licenses, registration, insurance inspection tolls etc..
Basically cyclist receive more than they put in. Hence my earlier posts referring to the 1%cyclists and the 99% everyone else.

The comment I responded to was in response to "roadway" upkeep, not "monies for biking" (whatever those are).

An uncited assertion that 1-2% of PA residents bike without using an automobile, ever, seems astounding. I don't buy that by a long shot. Live up to your "name", and prove it.

And if 1-2% do, PLEASE MORE! They're doing us a favor. Putting less crummy emissions in the air, requiring less highway upkeep (don't even try to tell me that a bike damages a roadway as much as a car, that's a joke of a thought!), increasing their overall health, etc. Hey, let's reduce the need to keep building bigger and bigger parking garages, how much did that ugly behemoth cost?

glad that the county approved this. trails are good excercise. moneY is tight in many towns tho. cannt imagine much of this will go past planning stages. Doylestown/New Hope wood be very good.
