Log College Students Raise $3,000 For Philabundance

One of the many service learning projects at Log College Middle School is an annual charity event called Empty Bowls.

Empty Bowls is an international movement that has participants create ceramic bowls to then be sold at a soup and bread dinner.  Proceeds go toward a hunger fighting organization.

Art Teacher Laurie Schenfelt started the Empty Bowl project last year at Log. She brought the community service project over from Leary Elementary School where she had held the events for many years.  

This year, more than 200 students created bowls that were featured at a dinner in the middle school cafeteria Friday evening. 

About 100 attendees comprised of 6th graders, their families, teachers and community volunteers came together at the Empty Bowls event this year, raising approximately $3000 for Philabundance.

In addition to making bowls in art class, the sixth grade students researched hunger fighting philanthropies and chose to support Philabundance because of its local connection and excellent reputation.  

Local businesses were enlisted to donate goods and services, and more than 50 baskets of contributed goods were also raffled off to support the cause.  

Local DJ Dave Soldano Sounds of Freedom DJ’s II served as MC for the event, keeping the nights energy level high, as everyone learned information about Philabundance while dining on small bowl of soup, a piece of bread and a glass of water .  

A Log College community member shared her personal story of her time in need of assistance from others while she was young.

Her inspirational story pointed out how one persons donation through a charitable organization such as Philabundance can change the course of another's life for the better in such a dramatic way.   

Philabundance Director of Marketing & Communications Marlo DelSordo spoke about the effect of hunger on people in our area.  She also participated with several Log College students who performed a skit based on information researched about hunger. 

All food for the dinner as well as supplies were donated. All of the funds raised by this event will go directly to support Philabundance in the effort to eradicate hunger.
