THEN: The Shop Rite grocery store on York Road in 1970.
NOW: A TD Bank now sits on the same property.

Welcome to the first installment of a new weekly feature called Warminster Then & Now.

Each week, an old photograph of the township will be compared with a similar shot taken today.

Our first photograph was contributed by reader Ann Born, a member of the "I Grew Up in Warminster" Facebook group. Taken in 1970, it is a shot of the Shop Rite grocery store that was located on York Road, across the street from the post office.

Now, 43 years later, the site has been turned into a TD Bank, with a patch of grass replacing the large parking lot.

If you enjoy this feature and have any vintage photos of Warminster, you can either post them here, or e-mail them to James.Boyle@patch.com.

About this column: This weekly feature will take a look at how the township has changed over the years. Related Topics: Then & Now and Warminster history

I remember the old Shop Rite, so many changes over the years. It used to feel like living in the counrty out here, but now it is more like living in the city :/

My father worked at that Shop Rite for many years; it's what brought our family to Pennsylvania (he was transferred from one of the NJ stores). It was like family. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane... it's always a nice journey!

Hi Colleen, wow such memories; I remember your Dad worked there. I went to school with Patty and Terry and just remembered your family first moved to Cypress before moving behind Nativity.

I lived here since 1968. It was like being in the country back then. It was beautiful.

Now with Anne's Choice, Centennial Village, 5 ponds and Shepherds Crossing it’s more like a waiting room for the inevitable.

My kids walk around and say "I see dead people" I tell them it’s just the residents and there not quite dead yet. Then they ask if there are more children, I tell them I'm not sure, they are building a new High School to handle more children, but then again they just consolidated the Elementary Schools because of fewer enrollments.

Also with the "Multi-Use" Zoning that our Board of Supervisors have adapted in the past decade, it pretty much gives any large land owner the right to build just about anything anywhere. It’s all a shame and makes me angry.

My father George McChesney opened this store up as Store Manager, we also moved to PA. from NJ. for this transition. My dad went on to become District manager for all PA. Shop-Rites and southern NJ. too.
After many years he left Shop-Rite and became store manager for Genuardi Supermarkets where the old A&P or was it Pantry Pride on York Rd. across from Nativity Catholic High School. Dad Passed away on April 9, 2009.

Kelly! I remember your dad very well (as do all of my brother & sisters). He & my dad were very good friends and I believe he was the one who gave my dad the managerial position in the appetizer in the Warminster store. Your dad was very generous to our family. I'm pretty sure he gave us tickets for all 7 of us to go to the circus and a Flyers game. We would have otherwise never been able to attend. He held a very special place in my dad's heart. I'm sorry to hear of his passing. My dad passed away in 1995; I'd like to believe they raised a beer together when they met again.

I distinctly remember being stuck in the snow in the Shop Rite parking lot. Must've been around '70 or '71.

Hi Colleen, I remember your parents very well also. My dad used to have parties at our house and we have old video tapes of these { 1960-1970's } of these wild parties and boy could they party, dancing, laughing and always a drink in tow. Your mom was always dressed nice with the short skirts, high heels and hair done to perfection { high hair, of course! } Everyone had a blast, us kids could never sleep through this so we would sneak down stairs and check things out, plus it was on video tape to watch later, there were some wild women there, I'll tell you that much, some of that action never made the tapes.
Thank you for the nice things you said about my dad, yes he was generous and when someone need a job, he would help them as much as he could, he also helped out the community with different things when they asked for help. Dad was a great guy and I miss him terribly.
Remember Reese's Tavern across the street from the store, a lot of employees from Shop-Rite would hang out there after work also.
Yes I'm sure they are raising a beer together now. Nice to hear from you, and tell your mother we said hi!

I'll enjoy the now and then articles. I live near the TD Bank now and have since 1991. Let me say that when I moved here the old Shop Rrite was the AARP Pharmacy and the building and grounds were in terrible shape. The TD property looks much better. TD doesn't own the whole property though, and something else will be built there at some point.

I don't know about that last statement Joe...hasn't that empty lot been empty for a number of years? And why. Could never understand why Warminster is so overgrown and that one lot just sits there. Until they do put something there, they ought to at least put some flower beds/bushes in. But, at least they keep it well groomed!
