Author Visits Centennial School District's Summer Academy

On August 6, 2013, CSD Summer Academy students and faculty were treated to a visit from children's author, LeeAnn Piermont Camut at Willow Dale Elementary School. LeeAnn Piermont Camut has published 3 books since 2010. During her visit she read "Toe Jam" to kindergarten students and "Peacock Parade" to the 1st and 2nd grade students.

"Toe Jam" is a fun way for students to learn to count to 10 by using their imagination and making everyday things into wacky ways to count. LeeAnn was asked why she wrote the book, "I was inspired by my son when he was born 15 years ago. It was always fascinating to me that he could put his small toes in his mouth when he was a baby." The students listened and laughed as the author read about the silly butterfly toes.

In the story, Peacock Parade, character Percy the peacock searches for something that he is good at. Percy's fun and clever personality helps him find his talent and celebrate the other peacocks' accomplishments. One student raised his hand and said "I eat turkey with peacock gravy on it" to which another student responded "I visited a zoo with my dad, and we saw a peacock".

Author, LeeAnn Camut was asked what is one thing she hoped students take away from the visit? LeeAnn responded, "That's a tough question since I have a few answers.  I guess the main answer is a love of writing and a belief in their abilities to make a difference with the power of words - that would be true of every book.  I also have goals related to the message in each book.  With Peacock Parade, I would like each student to see that he or she has a special talent to share and that every person has value. With Toe Jam, I hope little children laugh and see that counting can be fun. And with my new one, Smores Chores Chores, I would like to challenge children to turn obstacles into opportunities".

For more information about this author and ways to request a school visit, go to www.leeannpiermontcamut.com. LeeAnn provides free visits to local schools in Bucks and Montgomery counties and only asks that the books be made available via order form for the students to purchase before/during her visit.

The author is also the founder of "Be The Light of The Party" Foundation. Students can participate in the heart project for the foundation by coloring hearts for people in need. It is a great opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others and feel good about doing it. The hearts are distributed to nursing homes, homeless shelters and hospice care.
