What's going on around town today.

  • Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick announced the awarding of a $142,000 grant to the Warwick Fire Department during a ceremony at the station on York Road in Jamison Saturday afternoon. FEMA awarded the grant to help pay for replacing the department’s self contained breathing apparatuses.
  • Centennial School District has been placed on the College Board’s AP Achievement List for opening AP classroom doors to a significantly broader pool of students, while maintaining or improving the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher. From 2008 to 2010, Centennial has increased the number of students participating in AP from 136 to 303, while improving the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher, the score typically needed to earn college credit, from 73 percent in 2008 to 81 percent in 2010.
  • William Tennent Girls Basketball is accepting registration for its 14th annual Lady Panthers Basketball Camp. Girls entering grades 5-7 will attend July 25-28 at 9 a.m.-2p.m. Those entering grades 8-9 will go August 1-4. The cost is $140, but early registration will knock $40 off the price until June 1.
  • President Obama will address the nation tonight regarding the military action in Libya. The White House told the AP that Obama will talk at 7:30 p.m. (EST) about the actions taken with allies and partners, the transition to NATO command and control, and U.S. policy from here on.
  • Harry Coover, the inventor of Crazy Glue, died of congestive heart failure at his home in Kingsport, Tenn., CNN reports. Coover was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation last year for his work.
