Get 50-Cent Coffee as Yum Yum Donuts Turns 50

Locally owned Yum Yum Donuts celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. From June 24 to June 28, the shops in Warminster, Quakertown and Colmar offer 50-cent coffee.

At a recent Warminster Township supervisors meeting, board chairperson Leo Quinn asked a crowded room with a wide demographic that ranged between older citizens and adolescent cheerleaders from the Warminster Pioneers if they had ever enjoyed a treat from Yum Yum Donuts. Every hand shot into the air as the cheerleaders spoke excitedly about the last time they had a Monster donut.

For the past 50 years, three generations of the Conly family has worked hard to build the kind of reputation where simply saying the name of the store brings a smile to faces. It's that habit forming relationship that has allowed Yum Yum Donuts to sit just a few doors away from the nationally owned competition and keep chugging along.

It's the same relationship that will keep the donut shop going strong when the new Wawa opens across the street, says Dan Conly, who manages the Warminster location.

"It's all about selling quality products in a friendly atmosphere," said Conly. "We have a lot of loyal customers that can't live without us."

Gilbert and Cecelia Conly opened the first Yum Yum Donuts in 1963 at the same shopping strip now occupied by Little Leo's and Jim's Soft Pretzels. Nine years later, the Conlys had enough success to branch out to a second location and opened a new shop in Colmar. A third site opened in Quakertown in 1977, right around the same time that Gil and Cecelia handed over management to their son, Bruce, and his wife, Donna.

"It was the late 70s, and they tossed us the keys and moved down to Florida," said Bruce.

The second generation of Conlys branched out a little further when they opened a second Warminster Yum Yum Donuts at the corner of County Line and York roads. The corner shop had become a necessary pit stop for weekend warriors about to hit the road for the Jersey Shore.

That store, including its popular electronic sign with daily clever quips from Donna, has been replaced with a CVS Pharmacy. The only Warminster Yum Yum Donuts now sits at 500 West Street Road and still remains as popular as ever. Not even the fad of low-carb diets can keep the hungry customers away.

"People think and talk differently about how they eat," said Donna Conly. "But our donuts are still a treat, despite the diets. They are the reward for sticking to the plan. Donuts will always be a comfort food."

Starting June 24 through June 28, 50-cent coffee will be available for customers as part of the 50th anniversary celebration. Hours: Mon.-Sat. 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sun. 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
