Five Things for June 14

What's going on around town today.

  • On Tuesday night, the Centennial School Board recoognized Tennent's freshman basketball phenom Horace Spencer, who qualified for the outdoor state meet this spring in the high jump, clearing a height of 6 feet, 5 inches. Horace came out for track to increase his speed for basketball and placed tenth in the state with a jump of 6 feet, 4 inches.
  • The Bucks County Prison Oversight Board is now accepting applications to fill a citizen member vacancy, replacing outgoing member Walter Stevens who resigned earlier this month. The board oversees the operations of the Bucks County Correctional Facility (BCCF) and the Men’s and Women’s Community Corrections Centers. To be considered for a position, all candidates must send their resumes to the Bucks County Controller’s Office, Attention: Prison Oversight Board, 55 E. Court Street, Doylestown, PA 18901. Resumes will be accepted until Friday, June 29th.
  • Mostly cloudy today, with a high near 80, according to the National Weather Service.
  • Federal prosecutors dropped the remaining charges against former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards on Wednesday, less than two weeks after his corruption trial ended in an acquittal and mistrial, CNN reports.
  • On this day, June 14, 1954, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signs a bill into law that places the words "under God" into the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance.
