Boy Scouts Give Pocket-Sized Thanks to Troops Overseas
Pack 139 gathered at Willow Dale Elementary Tuesday night to prepare 300 pocket flags that will be sent to members of the armed services recently deployed to Afghanistan.
Before the excitement and rush to Christmas gets truly underway, Boy Scout Master Jerry Moritz wanted his troop to spend Tuesday night remembering the importance of two November holidays, Thanksgiving and Veterans Day.
"Tonight, I want us to spend time recognizing and thanking the men and women in uniform serving to protect our freedoms," Moritz told Boy Scout Pack 139 as they gathered at Willow Dale Elementary.
After handing out awards and announcing scouts who have advanced a level, the troop got to work showing their appreciation by preparing 300 pocket flags. Each scout and their parents worked together to carefully fold small American flags and fit them in a 3-by-3 inch plastic bag, along with a note thanking the service member.

All 300 flags will be sent to recently deployed Marines stationed at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan, according to Lona Drazek, a parent volunteer and den leader for one of the troop's two Webelos packs. The idea is to give the troops on the frontlines a small token of gratitude that they can keep close.
"I wanted to find a good community service project for the boys to earn their citizenship badges," said Drazek. "I came across this project and thought it would be perfect for the kids to show their appreciation."

Drazek suggested that the scouts write their first name, rank and age on the back of the accompanying note cards in the hopes that a service member may write back to them.
