Five Things for April 12

What's going on around town today.

  • The Warminster Symphony Orchestra announced the winners of its Young Artist Competition. Janet Wu, 12, from King of Prussia, won the children’s division with the piano, and Bihn Park, 14, of Haverford, won the youth division with the cello. Both will be invited to play at the WSO’s family concert Oct. 9.
  • East West Karate is offering an afterschool karate program at Leary Elementary for students n first through third grades. The class will be held every Wednesday, 3:15-4 p.m., from May 4-June 8. Registration is free and must be completed by April 19.
  • William Tennent’s baseball team hosts Council Rock North at 3:30. The track team travels to Bensalem for a meet at 3:30 p.m.
  • The Pennsylvania Assembly passed a bill co-sponsored by representatives Kathy Watson and Bernie O’Neill that will name the new 202 bypass between routes 63 and 611 the George A. Penglase Parkway, after a Doylestown resident who was a strong proponent for the roadway’s construction before his death in January 2005.
  • On this day, April 12, 1861: The Civil War begins when Confederate armies fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston, S.C. Check out to see how local newspapers reacted to the bombardment.
