Five Things for April 13

What's going on around town today.

Archbishop Wood’s Eric Raszawski will be among the high school students recognized at 6 p.m. tonight for their volunteer work at an awards program hosted by Ann’s Choice and organized by the YWCA of Bucks County. Each teen volunteer will represent his or her high school and receive a certificate of appreciation and a monetary award in recognition of their volunteer service.  Additionally, the one student selected by a group of independent judges as the Bucks County Teen Volunteer of the Year will receive a plaque in honor of his/her volunteer accomplishments.

Author James Howe, writer of more than 80 books, including Bunnicula, Pinky and Rex, and Houndsley and Catina, will make an appearance at on May 10.

William Tennent’s softball team hosts Truman at 3:30, while the baseball team travels to Truman for a game at the same time. The boys volleyball team visits Neshaminy for a match at 7 p.m.

CNN reports that Japan has declared the Fukushima Daiichi crisis a Level 7 event on the international system for rating nuclear accidents, putting it on par with the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the former Soviet Union. The top-scale designation was based on the massive release of radioactivity since the accident began, particularly in its early days, and classifies Fukushima Daiichi a "major accident" requiring long-term countermeasures.

On this day, April 13, 1997, Tiger Woods becomes the youngest golfer to win the Masters Tournament.
