Five Things for January 17

What's going on around town today.

  • The Centennial Finance Committee meets tonight at the district administration building at 7 p.m., where they will discuss the progress of paring down the $100 million 2012-2013 budget.
  • If you haven't discarded your Christmas tree yet, make sure to recycle it as part of the  chipping program. Trees will be chipped and used for park trails and if there are leftovers, the community will be able to use the remains for landscaping purposes. All decorations must be removed from the tree before dropping it off at the WREC, located at 1101 Little Lane, or , located at 300 Veterans Way.
  • Rain with a high near 49 today, according to the National Weather Service.
  • A handful of large websites will go dark on Wednesday to protest an anti-piracy bill that critics say will wreck the Internet as we know it, CNN reports. Wikipedia, user-submitted news site Reddit, the blog Boing Boing and the Cheezburger network of comedy sites all plan to participate in the blackout. The protest is their response to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill, a piece of proposed legislation that is working its way through Congress.
  • On this day, January 17, 1929, Popeye the Sailor Man, a cartoon character created by Elzie Segar, first appears in the Thimble Theatre comic strip.
