Five Things for July 1

What's going on around town today.

  • State Rep. Bernie O'Neill's office recently collected over 200 worn flags for Flag Day, to be handed over to the local for proper disposal, part of an on-going effort to help residents dispose of ripped and worn flags. Flags can be dropped off or left at the district offices in Warminster and Buckingham.
  • In honor of the Independence Day holiday weekend, Congressman Fitzpatrick’s staff will not be holding Doylestown office hours on Saturday, July 2.  Normal extended office hours in Doylestown will resume on Saturday, July 9 from 9 a.m.-noon at 108 North Main Street.
  • President Obama was in town yesterday for a campaign fundraising event, philly.com reports. He headed first to the Hyatt at the Bellevue on South Broad to meet about 800 campaign donors, then attended a second fundraiser, at the West Mount Airy home of David L. Cohen, the Comcast executive.
  • The Justice Department inquiry into CIA interrogations of terrorist detainees has led to a full criminal investigation into the deaths of two people while they were in custody in Iraq and Afghanistan, Attorney General Eric Holder announced to MSNBC Thursday.
  • On this day, July 1, 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg begins.
