Five Things for July 20

What's going on around town today.

  • The Craven Hall Historical Society will launch a 6-foot model replica of John Fitch's commercial steamboat at Warminster Community Park on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
  • Don't forget that official grand opening is tomorrow, too. The new located at the Center Point shopping center is offering free 8-ounce cups of frosty treats from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of the celebration.
  • This weekend marks the beginning of Ramadan. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, and the month when it is believed that the Holy Qur’an was sent by God to man. During that month, from dawn to dusk, observant Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, sex, smoking and anything that would distract from the observance of the faith.
  • A "top-to-bottom" review by the General Services Administration, the federal agency that was found to have spent lavishly on an October 2010 conference in Las Vegas, has revealed that the agency also spent more than a quarter-million dollars for a one-day awards ceremony just outside Washington in May 2010, CNN reports.
  • On this day, July 20, 1968, the first Special Olympics is held.
