Five Things for July 5

What's going on around town today.

  • There is no board of supervisors meeting tonight because of the reduced summer schedule. The next meeting is July 19 at 7 p.m.
  • Time is running out to  for the various categories in our Readers' Choice contest.
  • Mostly sunny, hot and humid today, with temperatures in the mid-90s, according to the National Weather Service.
  • Authorities told NBC News that a technical difficulty caused all of the fireworks at San Diego's Glorietta Bay show to go off at once Wednesday night. About 5 minutes before the show was supposed to start, a sudden burst of fireworks shot into the air near the bay. Throughout downtown San Diego, a large rumble could be felt just before 9 p.m.
  • On this day, July 5, 1975, Arthur Ashe becomes the first black man to win the Wimbledon singles title.
