What's going on around town today.

  • Dig out those hidden attic treasures and take them over to tonight and have it appraised by expert Barry Slosberg. The antique appraisal event will run from 6:30 to 9 p.m., costing $8 per item or $20 for three.
  • Runners from fourth to eighth grades are invited to join William Tennent's Cross Country Camp. The camp will take place on the high school track starting Aug. 20 and ending Aug. 24, 10 a.m.-noon. Cost is $35 and includes a free t-shirt if you register before Aug. 10.
  • Cloudy with a slight chance of rain in the evening, with a high near 79, according to the National Weather Service.
  • U.S. stocks finished in the red Thursday, ending a wretched month on a weak note, CNN reports. The Dow and Nasdaq logged the worst monthly performance since May 2010, when investors were spooked by the Flash Crash, while the S&P 500 posted its biggest monthly loss since September 2011.
  • On this day, June 1, 1974, the Heimlich maneuver for rescuing choking victims is published in the journal Emergency Medicine.
