Five Things for June 28

What's going on around town today.

  • Hartsville Fire Company is hosting Firefighters Camp July 6, 13, 20 and 27 at 7 p.m. for ages 14 and older. The free program is a joint effort by all of the fire stations in Warminster, Warwick and Warrington Townships to introduce young people to the Fire Service. Participants will learn many things including: hose rolls, carries and packing; fire hydrant operations, fire extinguisher operations, deluge gun operations, self contained breathing apparatus, pump connections, and many other basic skills.
  • The Centennial School Board will be meeting tonight at 7 p.m. There is much to discuss, so be sure to review the full itemized list of tonight’s agenda. Klinger basketball phenom Horace Spencer will receive recgonition for being named the number two middle school basketball player in the nation.
  • There's a chance of isolated thunderstorms today with highs in the upper 80s. The chance of rain is 30 percent.
  • Firefighters struggled early Tuesday to hold back a fierce blaze roaring out of control at the edge of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, a sprawling nuclear weapons complex that includes a plutonium facility, MSNBC reports. The laboratory was shut down, and the adjacent town of Los Alamos, home to about 12,000 people, was placed under a mandatory evacuation earlier.
  • On this day, June 28, 1919, World War I officially ends with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
