Five Things for March 17

What's going on around town today.

Top o’ the morning and happy St. Patrick’s Day to everybody. Have fun and be safe.

  • Today is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Born in England, he was kidnapped and forced into slavery somewhere in western Ireland. After escaping captivity, he returned to Britain and entered the priesthood. In 432, he came back to Ireland and spent the next 30 years evangelizing until his death on March 17, 461. No, he never drove away the snakes from Ireland.
  • Today is also the beginning of the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament. It’s your last chance to fill out those brackets before Clemson plays West Virginia at 12:15 p.m. (EST). Penn State and Temple go at it at 2:10 p.m. on TNT.
  • Warminster Parks and Recreation is accepting job applications for seasonal positions in the summer, including camp counselors, swimming instructors, park maintenance and bus drivers.
  • Friends of Warminster Parks hosts Casino Night this Saturday, 7-11 p.m. at the multi-purpose room in Ann’s Choice. Tickets cost $30 and get you a beef and beer dinner with a cash bar and $50 in chips (no cash value).
  • Reuters reports that the U.S. military on Wednesday ordered troops to stay at least 50 miles away from a crippled Japanese nuclear power plant and started prescribing medication ahead of higher-risk missions amid growing concerns about radiation.
