Five Things for May 3

What's going on around town today.

  • The Warminster Department of Parks and Recreation has discount tickets available for various amusement parks around the region. Warminster residents can save money on trips to places such as Adventure Aquarium, Dorney Park and Six Flags Great Adventure.
  • The Hatboro-Horsham School Board became the latest public entity to oppose a future airport at the Willow Grove air base, Horsham Patch . The board, which  of the 1,100-acre base property to build a future school, followed  Warminster and Montgomery townships in officially saying no to airport use at the property.
  • TD Bank, through the TD Charitable Foundation, recently donated a total of $2,500 to YWCA Bucks County as part of the bank’s commitment to giving back to the community. The YWCA will use the funds received from the TD Charitable Foundation to deliver the Let’s Read Math program to underserved youngsters at five YWCA Summer Camps in 2011.  Let’s Read Math is a series of workshops that connect literacy and mathematics by involving students in the reading of books with math themes and encouraging hands-on participation in projects to reinforce these concepts.  
  • Governor Tom Corbett has declared May Motorcycle Safety Month, Bensalem Patch . There were more than 4,000 crashes involving motorcycles on Pennsylvania roadways in 2010, resulting in 223 fatalities.
  • On this day, May 3, 1937, Maragaret Mitchell's epic novel, Gone With the Wind, wins the Pultizer Prize for Fiction.
