Five Things for November 11

Today is Veterans Day. Be sure to thank a vet for his or her service.

  • Longstreth Elementary School Students have constructed their own Memorial/Tribute Wall as part of their observance of Veterans’ Day. Each Longstreth family received a set of red, white, and blue stars and invited to write one name on each star that represents a family member or close friend that has served or is currently serving in our nation’s Armed Forces. They also extended their tribute to police officers, firemen, or any other service group. Students brought the stars back to school where they visited the Memorial/Tribute Wall and affixed their stars to the wall. All families have been invited to come and see the completed wall during American Education Week.
  • Veterans Day originated as "Armistice Day" on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.
  • The National Weather Service says its going to be a sunny veterans day, with a high near 50.
  • Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to repeal the federal law that defines marriage as between one man and one woman, CNN reports. The vote that sends the proposal to the full Senate floor was considered symbolic because the measure has no chance of getting passed by the Republican-led House.
  • On this day, Nov. 11, 1889, the state of Washington is admitted to the United States.
