  • Showers and possibly a thunderstorm today with a high near 74, according to the National Weather Service.
  • The Republican-controlled House passed a short-term spending plan early Friday that would keep the government funded for seven weeks after the end of the fiscal year on September 30, CNN reports. The temporary spending measure, which passed 219-203, would cut more spending to balance the amount of additional disaster relief money in a short-term government spending measure defeated earlier by the House.
  • On this day, September 23, 1846, the planet Neptune is discovered.
