Five Things for September 30

What's going on around town today.

  • Nativity of Our Lord is hosting a shredding event fundraiser Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon. Members of the public are invited to the church's parking lot to discard the piles of paper that are cluttering up their houses. The cost is $10 per box, and proceeds will benefit the Tiger Fund Scholarship Program.
  • Partly sunny today with a high of 71 and temperatures dropping to the 60s this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
  • William Tennent's football team travels to Harry S. Truman High School Saturday afternoon for a 2:30 game. Archbishop Wood hosts a football game at the William Tennent stadium Saturday night for a 7 p.m. game against Glenn Mills.
  • States are lining up to drop out of No Child Left Behind, the education initiative that was promoted as a historic achievement of the Bush administration, MSNBC reports. Since President Barack Obama announced last month that he would sign an executive order allowing states to request waivers from mandatory participation in the program, at least 27 have signaled that they will ask to opt out, and most others are reviewing their options.
  • On this day, September 30, 1955, 24-year-old film star James Dean dies in a car accident.
