Matthew 7:7-11New Living Translation (NLT)

7 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 “You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? 10 Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! 11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.

What do you ask God to give you?

I know it is easy to ask for wealth, comfort, health, provision. I do think God wants to provide us with each of these. However, more importantly, God wants to give us Him. He wants us to allow Him in. He wants us to give Him a chance.

How can we give God a chance? We can pray to Him. We can ask God to reveal Himself to us. We can talk with a friend who has developed a faith and relationship with God that we find interesting and want to explore how we too can have the same. We can read the Bible and other sacred texts. We can read the mystics. We can visit churches, mosques, temples and other places of service. We can join groups that discuss this very topic. Some of these groups meet regularly in physical locations. Some of these groups are online forums where you can read and post comments.

However, I believe that as we continue to explore God, we naturally transition from asking to allowing. Rather than asking God for wealth, comfort, health, provision, we allow. We trust that He knows what He is doing. We become more open to the experiences He wants to give us. We remove our agenda. We become open to His agenda.

I am not saying that any of this is easy. I am certain that I too push my agenda on God. I too need to be more patient. I need to remind myself to stop asking. I need to ALLOW myself to rest in God. I need to ALLOW God to bring life to me.

I look forward to what God wants to bring me!
