Relationship and Transformation

The Christian life is about relationship and social transformation. I will focus on relationship for this commentary. I will discuss social transformation on my next blog.

We are to have a relationship with God. We are to have a relationship with each other. It also follows that the more we love ourselves, the more successful we will be at loving God and loving others. You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:37-39.

We need to work on our relationship with God. Building this relationship with God will be different for each person. How do we cultivate a relationship with God? We read the Bible. We pray. We meditate. We attend church services where we sing, pray, recite liturgy, take communion and listen to sermons. We participate in group discussions. We read books. We enjoy nature and the outdoors. These are just a few of the various ways we continue to explore and deepen our relationship with God both individually and in community.

We need to work on our relationships with others. We do this by sharing a meal. We invite a new member of our community to share a meal with us. Jesus also shared meals with various individuals – tax collectors, outcasts, Pharisees, disciples, friends. We listen to each other. We vacation together. We play board games together. We exercise together. We watch movies together. We attend sporting, musical and other events together. We visit a park together. As we listen and share with each other, we continue to deepen and strengthen our relationships.

We need to love ourselves. God loves us. God believes in us. God wants us to enjoy life. God wants to provide for us. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:10 The more we realize and accept how much God loves us, the more we want to share this love with others.

As our relationship with God and others grows, we want to share this love with more people. We want to expand our view of who our community is so we can include them in our relationships and share this overflowing love with them. I will discuss social transformation in my next blog.
