Help Upper South Eagle Scout Candidate Retire American Flags

An Upper Southampton Eagle Scout Candidate Winston Stauffer wants to properly dispose of your tired, torn and tattered American flags.

Additional reporting by Gerry Dungan.

If you have a torn or tattered American flag sitting in the attic or basement because you just don't know what to do with it, Upper Southampton Eagle Scout candidate  Winston Stauffer has the answer.

Cardboard boxes have been set up around Warminster, Ivyland and Upper Southampton by Stauffer as a convenient and respectful option to dispose of the flags. Stauffer is collecting as many flags as he can as part of his Eagle Scout project.

On August 17 at 5 p.m., he will lead Boy Scout Troop 400 in a flag retirement ceremony at Bux-Mont Christian Church, 400 Jacksonville Road in Ivyland.

According to Phil Strunk, Bux-Mont Christian Church Preaching minster and Boy Scout Troop 400 Charter Organization representative, the collection boxes are for banner-sized flags. He told Patch that each of the 13 stripes will be cut, leaving the blue star field intact. The pieces will then be ceremoniously incinerated in a fire pit outside the church while a bugler plays "Taps."

The receptacles have been placed in the following locations:

  • Tanner’s Sports Center at 2301 York Road in Jamison
  • Warminster Police Department at 401 Gibson Avenue in Warminster
  • Giant at 2395 York Road in Jamison
  • Acme at 808 E. Street Road in Warminster
  • Davisville Church at 325 Street Road in Southampton
  • Bux-Mont Christian Church at 400 Jacksonville Road in Ivyland
