Acme Closed After Overnight Blaze

Firefighters from several local departments responded to the call early Wednesday morning.

A fire that started in a refrigerated cheese display case caused serious smoke and water damage to the early Wednesday morning.

What caused the case to catch fire remains under investigation by Warminster Fire Marshal Dan Laurich, officials said.

Fire crews were dispatched to the Acme at around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday for a water-flow alarm. When the first firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was seen pouring from the building, which was not staffed by an overnight stocking crew, Chief Mitch Shapiro said.

Sprinklers inside the store had contained the fire to the deli area, but the store was filled with heavy smoke conditions, the chief told Patch. Forceable entry was used to gain access to the inside of the store.

Firefighters from several local companies climbed onto the large grocery store's roof and cut two holes to vent the building. Those holes will have to be covered before the store can reopen, a firefighter at the scene said.

Shortly after firefighters arrived at the scene, power was cut to the building. It was restored a short time after firefighting operations had ended.

The Bucks County Health Department has been notified of the damage to the store. Fire officials and Acme employees surmised that much of the food will have to be discarded.

Acme will remain closed Wednesday with no word on whether the store would be open the rest of the week.

Fire crews from Hartsville, Northampton, Upper Southampton and Willow Grove assisted Warminster firefighters. provided a unit at the scene.
