Construction begins on Almshouse bridge

A section of Almshouse Road will be closed possibly until May for bridge rehabilitation.

Construction begins today on the Almshouse Road bridge that crosses Little Neshaminy Creek, which will affect motorists' travels in the coming months.

Almshouse road will be closed between Mearns Road and Rushland Road in Warwick Township so the bridge can be revitalized. It will remain closed until the expected completion date of May 9, according to PennDOT.

During this time, a traffic detour will be set up for motorists over Mearns Road, Bristol Road and Route 263 (York Road). Local access is still available up to the construction area, according to PennDOT.

PennDOT contracted Loftus Construction to fix the bridge that is in need of repair and is a major access road for locals. Motorists traveling to and from Doylestown and Newtown use Almshouse Road frequently. It also provides access to the Newtown Bypass and I-95 Northampton Township Manager Bob Pellegrino said.

Loftus will replace the 51-year-old structure's prestressed concrete adjacent box beams and bearing pads, pave the approaching roadways, repair the substructure and install scour protection, according to PennDOT.

The bridge is two lanes, 142 feet long and 44 feet wide. Each lane is 11 feet wide with two eight-foot shoulders. It supports 12,333 vehicles each day, according to PennDOT.

The Almshouse bridge rehabilitation is part of a larger, entirely state-funded project of $7,754,000 that includes another bridge in Bucks County and one in Montgomery County.

PennDOT urges travelers to add extra travel time to their trips through the area and check www.dot.state.pa.us/district6 or call (610) 205-6700 for more information.
