Warminster Police Officer Promoted to Corporal

The top performance on a tough, competitive oral and written exam earned Warminster Police Officer Michael Schmalz a promotion to corporal, Police Chief Michael Murphy said last night after a presentation that kicked off the board of supervisors' meeting.

"He brings a wealth of experience to the department," said Murphy. "Mike has a lot of knowledge about crime scene investigations, and he's also an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police, so he gives us good perspectives on national issues."

Schmalz's promotion fills a spot left vacant by last year's promotion of David Erenius to sergeant. The duties of the position include overseeing a nine-man patrol squad and incorparating team management best practices.

"I supervise along with the sergeant," said Schmalz. "It also means a lot more paperwork."

Schmalz, a CB East graduate, has been a Buckingham resident all of his life, Murphy said during the presentation. He graduated from the Temple University Police Academy in 1984 and joined the Warminster police department in 2002. Schmalz is also a member of the Bucks County Major Incident Response Team (MIRT).

Thursday evening's meting also debuted the new administration team, with interim township manager Rich Manfredi and solicitor Mary Eberle seated to the left of board chairperson Leo Quinn's left. With only two days between their appointment and first public appearance, some new business items were tabled for later discussion after Manfredi and Eberle make more progress with the transition.
