Archbishop Wood Honors Senior Class

Numerous members of the graduating class of 2011 received scholarships and awards from the school and area groups.

Archbishop Wood’s class of 2011 provided the exception to an all-too-familiar answer to the question, “What did you learn in school today?”  Rather than saying, “nothing,” and turning on the television, seniors were busy playing sports, building robots, playing instruments for the school’s band, and so on. Many of their accomplishments were recognized during an awards and scholarships presentation ceremony at the school’s auditorium Wednesday night.

Principal Mary Harkins kicked off the event by noting that this senior class was, “marked by excellence,” and that she and the school were, “sad to see them go.”

Following that, Sharon Blastic, chair of the school’s religion department, presented awards including The President’s Gold Award for Academic Excellence, The President’s Silver Award for Academic Achievement and Four Years of Perfect Conduct.

Special awards and scholarships were then given to outstanding seniors from different organizations affiliated with the school.

First, a representative from the U.S. Army presented the United States Army Reserves National Scholar Athlete Awards to Katie Boligitz and Timothy Goodwin.  Boligitz received the award for her success running on the cross country team.  She plans to continue to run La Salle University, where she will major in math.

Goodwin also received a citation from Marguerite Quinn, state representative of Pennsylvania's 143rd legislative district.  He plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh to study biology.  Goodwin ran cross country and track for Archbishop Wood and intends to walk-on the cross country team for Pitt.  Though he knows that it may be tough, he said, “One way or another, I’ll be there.”

Two Unsung Hero Awards were presented to Kevin Beebie and Kiersten Brown, who were involved in activities not to better themselves, but to better the school and the community. Beebie plans to major in statistics at the Pennsylvania State University, and Brown will study nursing at Temple University.

Andrea Murphy received recognition from the Southampton Kiwanis, the 143rd Legislation District, and a scholarship fund.  Murphy is also headed to Penn State, where she will study actuarial science.  Murphy enjoyed the award ceremony, saying, “it was good to see everyone recognized.”

On that same note, Goodwin added, “It’s been a good four years and we’ve all worked hard for our accomplishments.”

The seniors will be scattered between many prestigious universities.  Scranton, Temple, Penn State, Widener, North Western, Albright, Villanova, Holy Family, Drexel, Pittsburgh, and La Salle – just to name a few, will be awaiting some of these bright seniors.

Following the awards, the parents of the seniors were recognized, and school President Gary Zimmaro made closing remarks, giving the class of 2011 some advice and expressing his appreciation, pride, and gratitude on behalf of Archbishop Wood.

Archbishop Wood’s graduation will take place Monday, June 6 at 11 a.m. at Villanova University.
