Catholic High School Students May Be Back in School Tuesday

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the teacher's union have reached a tentative agreement, a joint statement from the teacher's union and the archdiocese stated.

After nearly two weeks of striking, it seems the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Local 1776, the union representing the more than 700 Catholic high school teachers, have reached a tentative agreement, a representative from the union stated. Details of the new contract have not been released.

Major  have included union member's fear of decreased job security and the Archdiocese's push for necessary changes that they believe will increase the diocese's competitiveness.

All 17 Catholic high schools have been closed since last week and Catholic Parents Respond, an ad hoc organization of parents that was formed last week, scheduled a rally Monday evening to protest the impasse.

According to a release from CPR, parents are angered by the lack of progress of the contract negotiations and they "will reinforce their rallying cry for parents to withhold tuition payments until all children are back in school where they belong." If an agreement is reached, the protest will be canceled.

The teachers were scheduled to vote on the tentative agreement at at 10 a.m. meeting Monday and, if the new contract is approved, teachers will return to school for orientation and business will begin as usual Tuesday.
