Middle School Roof Repairs to Cost Centennial $1.5M

Repairs will take place over the summer and should be completed by the start of the 2013-14 academic year, according to school board members.

The Centennial School Board recently approved a bid to replace the roof at Log College Middle School and to patch the roof at Klinger Middle School.

The bid was awarded to Jottan, Inc. of Florence, N.J. at a cost of $1,472,523 for Log College and $54,800 for Klinger.

The roof at Log College Middle School will receive a complete replacement, while the roof at Klinger Middle School will by patched, with total replacement to take place at a later date.

“We are leaning toward [the year of] 14-15 for the replacing the roof at Klinger,” said Board Member Michael Hartline.

Board Member Jane Schrader Lynch questioned the sum total of the roof repairs, noting that the total cost incurred would not be covered by the money obtained from last year’s sale of the district’s three former elementary school properties.

“I’m not saying we don’t need the work, my point is we sold three schools to do the roofs and we don’t have enough money to complete both schools,” said Lynch.

“The combination of the repair on Klinger and the new roof on Log just about drains that amount of money that we sold the schools for,” she added.

School Board President Andrew Pollock said the three schools were not sold solely to do the roofs. He said the board agreed to put the money obtained from the sale of the schools into a fund to do the roofs.

“We knew it would not be enough to do the entire project,” Pollock said. “Just like a house, when you need repairs you find the money in the house to make the repairs.”

Centennial's Chief Financial Officer Christopher Berdnik said according to his projections the district should end the year with roughly $6.3 million in the capital reserve fund.

Berdnik said if everything goes according to plan, “on paper, [the district] would have enough to finish the Klinger roof.”

The allotted repairs to both middle school roofs are expected to take place over the summer. Board members said the work should be complete by the start of the 2013-14 academic year.
