Centrifuge Museum Hosts Cyber Charter School Field Trip

Students from the Commonwealth Connections Academy took a tour of the Johnsville Centrifuge and Science Museum on Sunday.

Johnsville Centrifuge and Science Museum hosted a special day of learning for the students of the Commonwealth Connections Academy Charter School on Sunday.

Commonwealth Connections’ mobile classroom - a 38 foot long vehicle equipped with satellite internet capability, wireless internet access, computers, digital media, interactive smartboards, microscopes, and all the equipment needed to conduct complete science labs, reading lessons and many other classroom activities sat outside the museum on Falcon Circle as more than 25 students arrived for the tour.

Hatboro resident Kelly McPeak organized the trip and made the request for the mobile classroom to make a stop in Warminster because she wanted to give her two sons and some of their classmates a chance to meet up and learn about the discoveries that were made at the Naval Air Development Center (NADC).

"The Mercury astronauts trained here," said McPeak, Community Coordinator of the Commonwealth Connections Academy. "Technology such as GPS was engineered right here, in our own backyard."

After spending 2011 acquiring important scientific artifacts such as the original , officials from the Johnsville Centrifuge and Science Museum want to shift their focus this year. The field trip represents a stronger push to tout the educational benefits of the museum.

“We are thrilled to welcome the students and parents of Commonwealth Connections Academy to the museum,” said Museum President Michael Maguire.  “The Johnsville Centrifuge provides an ideal inspirational background for students to learn about the history of the U.S. space program and the science behind one of our nation’s greatest achievements.”

The museum is open the public on the first and third Sunday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. Group tours for schools, scout troops and community organizations can be arranged by contacting the Johnsville Centrifuge and Science Museum at (267) 250-8841.
