Klinger Students Honor Veterans with Annual Ceremony

Friday morning's ceremony at Klinger Middle School honored veterans from all branches of the military.

A standing ovation greeted dozens of veterans and their families as they filed into the Klinger Middle School auditorium Friday morning for the annual Veterans Day ceremony.

It's a longstanding tradition for students to invite family members who served in the armed forces to participate in the ceremony that thanks the brave men and women for their dedication and service to the country.

"This is organized by the social studies department each year," said Klinger principal Michael Johnson. "It shows the students the rich history in their families and connects them to the curriculum."

Following a presentation of the flag by Klinger Boy Scout Troops 5 and 139, the Klinger Chamber Orchestra played a rousing rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner."

Johnson then took the stage to thank the veterans for attending the ceremony and remarked on growing up with a father who served in the military.

A recitation of poems and an arrangement of patriotic music gave way to a presentation and slide show by Brenda Hecklin, a representative from A Hero's Welcome. The organization, founded by Pottstown woman Sharon Hyland Keyser, organizes parades and parties celebrating the arrival home of a soldier from combat.

"We want them to know that we support them and appreciate that the stood up for us and the United States," said Hecklin.

The ceremony was followed by a reception for the veterans and their families in the gymnasium.
