Mundy Signs 4-Year Superintendent Contract

Dr. Joyce Mundy served as substitute superintendent after the departure of her predecessor, Dr. Jennifer Cressman. Mundy joined the Centennial School District as an assistant superintendent two years ago.

Two years as assistant and one month as the substitute, Dr. Joyce Mundy will get to drop the modifiers on July 1 as her four-year contract as Centennial School District's full-time superintendent was unanimously approved by the school board this week.

Mundy's promotion comes just weeks after her predecessor, Dr. Jennifer Cressman, took a leave of absence and later agreed to terminate her contract a year early.

According to settlement documents (see attached .pdf) provided by the school district, Cressman was notified by the board that her contract would not be renewed after it's original end date of June 30, 2014. After receiving the notification, Cressman informed the board that "she would be willing to leave her position earlier...in order to accelerate the transition to a new administrative leader."

The contract settlement included the pay out of Cressman's salary through June 30, 2013, plus a severance package of $118,575, which is equal to nine months of her 2012-13 salary, plus a $17,938 lump-sum payment for her accrued vacation time.

No comment has been made about the reasons for Cressman's dismissal from the position. The details of the settlement contract prohibits either party from making disparaging remarks about the other.

As Mundy takes over the management of the school district, her main focus moving forward is creating better communication between administration, teachers, parents and students. Last week, she hosted several town hall-style forums where parents and community members could directly voice their major concerns.

"It was a great start for us to move the district forward and transform what we're doing," said Mundy. "Over the next three to five months, I plan to talk to as many groups as possible and gain a clear vision from all the district's stakeholders."

Prior to her arrival to Centennial in 2011, Mundy served as an assistant to the superintendent and middle school principal in the New Hope-Solebury School District. During that tenure, she received recognition as Pennsylvania Middle School Principal of the Year.

Before her time in New Hope-Solebury, Dr. Mundy served as assistant principal in Souderton School District and as an English teacher in the Council Rock School District.

"Her work in Centennial School District during the past two years has led to positive changes in curriculum, instruction, and leadership structures throughout the district," said school board President Dr. Andrew Pollock. "We look forward to her tenure bringing continued positive growth for Centennial School District.”

Mundy received a bachelor’s degree in English/Secondary Education at Cabrini College in Radnor, a master’s degree in Education at Arcadia University in Glenside, and a K-12 principal certification from Immaculata University in Immaculata, Pa.

Additionally, she earned her Doctorate from Widener University in the School Systems Leadership Program. Mundy has also worked as a speaker, advocate, and trainer on Safe Schools Initiatives and Diversity Programming.
