Tennent Kicks Off Homecoming Weekend with 21-18 Victory

The win over Bensalem was capped off with the crowning of the homecoming king and queen.

It was a sea of pink at stadium as fans supporting breast cancer awareness month cheered their team’s defeat of the Bensalem High School Owls by a score of 21-18 during the annual Homecoming football game.

Rally towels sponsored by Modell’s were given to fans as they entered the stands, to help cheer on the team. The towels were useful in wiping down the recent rain water off the cold bleachers.

There was a good amount of nervous anticipation among the crowd, as everyone anxiously waited to see who would be crowned this year’s Homecoming King and Queen.  This year’s nominees were voted on by the senior class during a preliminary vote. Afterwards, the names were narrowed to the top candidates, before the two winners were eventually announced.

This year’s nominees for Homecoming King were Chris Gerace, Isaiah Harris, Anthony Mackell, Karthik Manoranjan, Dan McGorrey, and Jeff Piotrowski. The nominees for Homecoming queen were Allie Admas, Rachael Borman, Lauren Dimaio, Emily Streahle, Krista Titus and Sasha Woshezyn.

Each nominee was accompanied by an escort and lined up along the home sidelines during halftime. Two chairs were placed at midfield for the winners. Each nominee smiled brightly while the names were called, and even a few cheered afterwards despite the fact that they hadn’t been picked.

The two winners crowned this year were Manoranjan and Emily. The lucky couple each received a crown and sash before being ceremoniously driven on the back of a golf cart for a lap around the stadium’s track. They will get to enjoy their royal reign with all of their classmates at tonight’s Homecoming dance at the school.

An ecstatic Streahle seemed overwhelmed after receiving the title. “I’m really excited to win. [I] didn’t think I was going to,” she said. “Everyone at Tennent is awesome.”

“It’s a great experience, great way to end my four years here,” Manoranjan said. “I’m gonna miss Homecoming.”

For John Wolf, a recent graduate of Tennent and current student at Bucks County Community College, coming back for the Homecoming game was worth it. “[It was] definitely a lot of fun,” he said. “Fans are helping the game go great. [They] make the environment.”

For senior Chris Anzideo, the homecoming game was a big deal. “It’s a big scheduled event for the school, all of my friends came out, and I’m here to support all of the nominees,” he said. Anzideo plans on either attending Penn State University or Florida State University next year and hopes to study Aeronautical Science.

After the game, Tennet Coach William Keeny was pleased to see his team win the homecoming game. “It’s always important to win the Homecoming game. I’m really happy we got a win. The kids played well and we executed. It was a complete game.” The team now holds a 3-4 record and will go on to face Council Rock South next week.

Panthers Quarterback Kevin Kilkenny was also glad his team pulled out a victory. “We practiced well,” Kilkenny said. “We didn’t want to let our school down, ourselves down and our coaches down.”

After tomorrow’s big dance, the next big event for Tennent will be the annual Powder Puff football game between the senior women’s cheerleaders and the junior women’s cheerleaders. The men’s football team will stay on the sidelines, and support each side dressed as cheerleaders. Don’t be surprised to see some of them attempt to do the very same stunts the women are known to pull off.  Fans are invited to join in on the fun at the stadium on November 16 at 6 p.m.
