Wood Cheerleading Kicks it up for State Champs

The Archbishop Wood Cheerleading team is riding high on its way to compete in the PIAA's first state championship competition for the sport.

After years of watching from the sidelines as the football team plowed its way through the competition for championship glory, the Archbishop Wood cheerleading team will finally have chance to add a state trophy to the high school's shelves.

The Vikings' cheer squad will compete with more than 90 other teams, including Philadelphia Caholic League rivals Lansdale Catholic and Archbishop Ryan, in the inaugural PIAA Competitive Spirit Championship at Hershey Park Stadium on Saturday.

"We're so glad that the league has finally recognized cheerleading as a sport," said Jackie Britton, head coach of the team. Britton has spent the past couple years building up the team from just a sideline show to a regular finalist in national competitions.
