Cub Scouts Start Season of Giving with Breakfast in a Bag

The members of boy scout Troop 139 spent an hour packing more than a hundred meals for homebound residents in the Greater Philadelphia five county region last week.

'Tis the season for generosity, as charitable groups make an extra effort to provide relief to those who need it the most. The members of Cub Scout Troop 139 showed last Tuesday they are prepared to work hard over the next few weeks to give a helping hand to the community.

Almost 50 scouts and their parents spent an hour at Willow Dale Elementary stuffing more than one hundred bags with cereal boxes, oatmeal bars, juice, coffee and more to help homebound seniors have an easy meal in the morning.

"We had an assembly line going at each table," said Linda Pellarin, one of the leaders for Pack 139. "The scouts donated the food and put the meals together."

The Breakfast in a Bag packages will be sent to Aid for Friends, a non-profit that provides meals to homebound residents in the five-county Greater Philadelphia region.

The scouts may not be able to see the look on a recipient's face when they receive the pre-packaged breakfast, but the importance of donating the food was not lost on them.

"The scoutmaster explained who the meals were for, people that could not go out and get the food themselves," said Pellarin. "The boys were grateful that they could help those who really needed it."

The fundraising efforts continue into December for Pack 139 with a special Hershey bar sales throughout Warminster. For $2, buyers will receive a chocolate bar specially decorated in holiday-themed wrappings, a unique and perfect stocking stuffer. Tables will be set up on the following dates:
