Lending a Helping Paw for Cancer Survivors

Man’s best friend lent a paw and helped to raise more than $70,000 Saturday during the 13th annual Paws 4 Life dog walk at . More than 300 people and their dogs, many decked out in Phillies gear, walked the mile and a half trail all in good spirits for a good cause.

Funds raised during the event benefited Gilda’s Club Delaware Valley, an organization which provides free programs and support to local men, women and children living with cancer. Gilda's Club Delaware Valley is the local chapter of Gilda's Club, which was founded in memory of Gilda Radner of Saturday Night Live. Radner firmly believed that no one should go through cancer alone. She died of ovarian cancer at age 43.

“A cancer diagnosis changes the lives of everyone and at Gilda's Club we provide free social and emotional support groups for men, women and children living with all forms of cancer or living with a loved one's diagnosis,” said Kelly Harris, chief executive officer of Gilda's Club Delaware Valley. “This is one of our most popular fundraising events.  It's one of those rare events where dog lovers can bring their dogs, support a great local cause, and have fun participating in dog-related talent shows, demos and more.”

After the walk, registrants were treated to a fun filled day that included Eagles cheerleaders, the Mid-Atlantic Disc Dogs, face painting, raffle baskets, great music provided by the Sounds of Freedom DJs, and of course, hot dogs were also available as a great treat for lunch. 

Carol Evantz of Warminster, along with her dog Cassidy, was first time walker and happy to be there. “It’s for a good cause, it’s a beautiful day, and I got a lot of good pictures.” Marie Casimir of Chalfont echoed those sentiments. As a board member for Gilda’s Club, Casimir was walking for a family member with cancer.
