The Brunette Lucy

Even Lazy Summer Days Offer Learning Opportunities

Lucy waxes poetic about the summer months for all parents; homeschooler or not.

Matt and I have homeschooled our children for years. So when summer comes around, I don’t know who’s more excited – us or them. After the last test is graded, we throw on Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out for Summer” and then dance around like a bunch of drunken sailors. We’ve got a whole lot of nothing to do for a few months. I want to clarify; we don’t homeschool because we think teachers aren’t doing a good job. On the contrary, we think teachers have the hardest job out there these days. When I was younger, if your teacher looked at you cross-eyed, you were nervous; bullies were thrown out on their bullying rear ends. These days, teachers are asked to be teacher, friend, parent, babysitter, nurse, mentor, role model, and a host of other …

Pack a Lunch With a Healthy Punch

This mom around town is planning back to school lunches and has some tips to share.

Back to school means back to packing lunches. Yikes! I have such a hard time coming up with new ideas.  Peanut butter and jelly gets boring. Nutella has been a great backup especially paired with some strawberries, but that gets old too. Regardless, both options will be in my pantry for busy mornings but I need some more interesting solutions. Do you have any good lunch box ideas? I asked around and some other moms shared their tips with me. Mom of two Elise S. told me how she brightens up peanut butter and jelly or tuna sandwiches with a little trick. “I sometimes cut them into different shapes with cookie cutters or use a little gadget that cuts the sandwich into a circle with no crusts.” Kids love the “no crust” sandwiches but did you …

I picked up a themos at 5below and my daughter takes spaghettios for lunch. I just cook them for 3 minutes in the microwave (in a microwavable bowl- instead of 90 secs.) and then put them in the thermos in microwave for another 30 secs. She says they are still warm at lunchtime.   more ›

School's Back!

The doors are open and the buses are rolling on the first day of school. Upload your pictures of the kids on their way out the door.

The first day of school is one of those days that seems like will never get here, yet when it arrives, you can't believe it came so quickly.  Hopefully, all of the shopping is completed and you got everything they need, at least for the next few weeks. Now, the kids are off to start their new school year. it's an especially exciting first day of school for the Centennial School District, as the new Davis Elementary opens its doors. Later this year, the new McDonald Elementary is also slated for a grand opening. How did you make out this morning? Did the buses arrive on time? How much of a grace period are you willing to give the bus drivers to get the routes down pat? Upload your pictures from today and sound off on your expectations this …

My daughter's bus was 5 min early yesterday. Thankfully she was so excited that we were there 10 mins early and she caught it. I was under the impression that if a bus was running early on its route it was supposed to wait. Apparently this must be the districts answer to not enough buses.   more ›

Ann's Choice Organizes Annual Back-to-School Clothing Drive

More than 10,000 articles of clothing collected over the past seven years to help get kids off to school

Residents at the Ann’s Choice active adult community had a little help from some little hands working with approximately 1,200 articles of new clothing that they collected from fellow residents during the annual Back to School Kids Clothing Drive. Friday morning, seniors at the community and local children worked together to sort up and pack up the goods to get them ready for distribution just in time for the new school year. As in past years, the clothing will go to NGA, Inc., New Clothes for New Tomorrows, a Bucks County chapter of a national organization that provides new clothing to underserved children.  The non-profit organization will distribute the clothing to needy families throughout the region. Ann’s Choice resident Felisa Owen…

Ramp Up for Back-to-School with Bedtime Math

With the new school year upon us, help get your kids’ brains get working again with this fun, free daily email newsletter.

Students are headed back to the classroom, which means it’s time for an abundance of expensive school supplies, backpacks full of complicated textbooks and dreaded questions about math homework. With back-to-school stresses piling up, Laura Overdeck wants to let children and parents in on a little secret: math can be fun. Really.  Overdeck is on a mission to change the way Americans think about math — especially given that math anxiety has been tracked in kids as young as age 5. This is what inspired her to create Bedtime Math, a nonprofit that sends out a daily email with a math problem tailored to “wee ones,” little and big kids.  Overdeck, of Short Hills, N.J., is an astrophysics graduate and MBA. Her love of math started long ago, by …

Start Thinking About School Lunches

Check out these tips for packing healthy, inexpensive school lunches for your kids.

Thinking about back-to-school? Don’t forget about school lunches. The average cost of school lunch is anywhere from $1.50 to $3.50 a day. Comparatively, if you pack your child’s lunch, the average cost is about $2 a day. School lunches usually consist of two or three different main-course options, with sides of grains, fruit and veggies and a beverage. If you choose to pack your child’s lunch, you naturally have more control over what your child is eating, and you can pack his or her favorites. You can also be sure your child’s lunch meets any special dietary needs (like food allergies) by packing it yourself. Try to mix it up. If you pack your child the same boring sandwich and snacks every day, chances are good he or she will toss it or …

PennDOT: Drivers Should Look Out for Students, School Buses

Violations of school bus stopping law carry strong penalties.

As the new school year begins, PennDOT reminds drivers to remain vigilant as students and school buses return to the roadways.  “Our ultimate goal is to make sure everyone safely arrives at their destination,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch in a release. “Motorists should avoid distractions and obey school bus and school zone traffic laws so we have the safest possible environment for students boarding and exiting buses.” By law, motorists approaching from all directions are required to stop at least 10 feet from a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. The only exception is when a driver encounters a school bus stopping on the opposite side of a highway clearly separated by a divider, such as concrete …
