In 2013, Warminster Township allotted $7,500 to give back to the community through the Department of Parks and Recreation's community assistance grants.
Warminster Township recently awarded several community organizations funds through the Parks and Recreation Department's community assistance grant program. “These grants are something that have been going on in the township for a long time,” said Karen Whitney, Parks and Recreation Department director. Whitney said what differs from year to year is the amount of funding available, as that number fluctuates in accordance with the municipal budget. In 2013, the township allotted $7,500 to give back to the community through community assistance grants. The Warminster Township Board of Supervisors met for its annual reorganization meeting Thursday evening.
The new year brings no change to the Warminster Township Board of Supervisors, as all will remain in their currently appointed posts. At its annual reorganization meeting, members of the board voted to retain Leo Quinn as board chairman, Tom Panzer as vice chairman, and Frank Feinberg as Treasurer. Following the nominations, Quinn took asked for a moment to "reflect on 2012 before kicking off 2013." Quinn noted that while the nation faced financial problems in the new year, Warminster was not dealing with any kind of fiscal cliff. Lifelong Warminster resident Dan McPhillips was chosen from a field of 13 applicants.
With a 3-1 vote, the Warminster Board of Supervisors chose longtime township resident Dan McPhillips to fill the seat left open by Ellen Jarvis' resignation. McPhillips will be sworn into office at the next scheduled supervisors meeting on April 5, and he will serve out the remainder of Jarvis' term, which ends in 2013. McPhillips was one of 13 candidates to apply for the open seat. His experience on several township boards and committees was one of the main reasons for his selection, according to Supervisor Tom Panzer, who made the nomination. Both parties strive to overcome the normally low voter turnouts during off-year elections.
It's hard to ignore the increasing number of roadside signs along the major roads throughout Warminster as the Nov. 8 Election Day looms in the near future. For candidates on both sides of the local ticket, the challenge with less than a month to go is simply raising awareness of the campaign. Voter turnout is notoriously lower during years without any major national campaigns or referendums to draw out the electorate. "We've been walking the neighborhoods and knocking on doors," said Mark McKee, Republican candidate for the Warminster Board of Supervisors, "and we've met a lot of people who don't even know there's a race." Warminster board of supervisors presented commendations to three firefighters who evacuated four people from an apartment fire at Bucks Landing.
The Warminster board of supervisors began its meeting Thursday night with a presentation of commendations to three firefighters who helped four people escape an apartment fire at Bucks Landing on May 19. Battalion Chief Pete Croak and firefighter Tim Lambert of the Warminster Fire Department and firefighter Joe Velten of the Hartsville Fire Company accepted the certificates to a standing ovation from a room packed with relatives and fellow firefighters. The trio was then surprised by an announcement from Joe Cowhey, owner of the Cowhey Family ShopRite in Warminster. He thanked the firefighters for their service and invited them to another presentation Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at the store, where they will receive a free month of groceries…
