Gilda's Club Celebrates the Holidays

The Warminster-based cancer support community welcomed Santa Claus and Hanukkah Harry Saturday morning.

More than 60 children and their families came together at the Delaware Valley chapter of Gilda's Club in Warminster Saturday morning to celebrate the holidays. The annual treat featured plenty of pancakes, french toast and bacon to go around, along with fun activities such as gingerbread man decorating. At 10:30 a.m., Santa Claus and Hanukkah Harry arrived via escort courtesy of the Ivyland Police Department. Each child said hello to the jolly visitors and walked away with their own gift. Gilda's Club Delaware Valley celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2013. The organization was founded shortly after the death of legendary comedienne Gilda Radner from ovarian cancer. This year, Hanukkah begins on the evening of Dec. 8 and ends on the evening of Dec. 16. Observing the Festival of Lights goes hand-in-hand with making special Hanukkah foods. When Does Hanukkah 2012 Start?

The Jewish holiday begins a little early this year.

  Mark your calendars for the 25th day of the month of Kislev. That's when Hanukkah starts in 2012. For those of us who aren't so tuned into the Jewish calendar, that translates to sundown on Saturday Dec. 8. The holiday, also called the Festival of Lights, lasts eight days. Hanukkah commemorates the story of the Maccabean Revolt against Syrian rulers in present day Israel 2,300 years ago. The Maccabees wanted to rededicate Jerusalem's main temple, but had only enough oil to kindle the Eternal Light for one day. Yet the oil lasted for eight, according to the story, and thus the holiday of Hanukkah was born.
