Homeless Count Shines Light on Invisible Problem

The Housing Continuum and Care agency counted more than 150 unsheltered people living in Bucks County.

One day before starting the official count of unsheltered people living in Bucks County, volunteer Deborah Neidhart asked a staff member at one of the Central Bucks libraries if she knew of any homeless people in the area. Neidhart said the woman was shocked and denied that there were any homeless people at all in the area. "If you are not exposed to it, if you don't see it, then you really don't know that it exists," she said. "It's more invisible in Central Bucks than anywhere else in the county." It's a common misconception that Neidhart encounters, that only the lower part of Bucks County has a homeless population. It's a myth that Neidhart needs to shatter if she and the rest of her team hope to get an accurate count. "The camps are …

Cold Weather Alert Issued for Next Week

Temperatures are expected to be frigid the next few days, prompting cold weather preparation.

A governmental cold-weather alert was issued Friday in advance of a cold front expected to bring frigid temperatures overnight next week. Bucks County's Code Blue weather alert will run from 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20 through 7 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, county officials said Friday. The alert puts two Bucks County churches on call to help the homeless or others needing shelter. The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures overnight on Sunday to drop to around 24 degrees and continue to fall. Tuesday night's low is predicted to be about 15 degrees. Two churches are on-call to assist residents in Central Bucks and Lower Bucks. Woodside Presbyterian in Yardley and Trinity Episcopal in Buckingham will activate their emergency shelters, as…

Blaze at Homeless Encampment Under Investigation

Police and the Fire Marshal's office are investigating the incident, which may be linked to an altercation.

In the woods off Ash Circle in the Warminster Heights section of the township Tuesday afternoon, a fire ripped through a structure that was inhabited by a homeless person, and the cause remains under investigation, authorities report. The fire occurred in a wooden structure, once used by paintballers, that was inhabited by a homeless person, Fire Marshal Dan Laurich said at the scene. The fire was contained to the structure and some brush surrounding it. No official cause has been determined yet, he added. The fire was discovered by Warminster Fire Department Battalion Chief Pete Croak, who spotted thick black smoke rising from the wooded area, jumped into his SUV and began investigating; discovering the fire at the camp in the woods. …

Is it legal to live in the woods like that? The more I head about criminal and quetionable activities along Jacksonville Road between Street and County line the less I want to go anywhere near that area.   more ›

With Airport Rejected, Roads Through Base Approved

The Horsham Land Reuse Authority acted on 17 notices of interest submitted for various parcels of Willow Grove air base, including roadways that would be extended through the property.

Transportation is king for the Willow Grove air base redevelopment. And, with an airport decidedly out of the picture, the Horsham Land Reuse Authority agreed Wednesday that including other modes of transportation, such as bike trails and roads, is key.  The HLRA gave the ok for further consideration to just under half of the 17 notices of interest for various entities looking to acquire land for free or at a dramatically reduced cost. For the most part, that means the HLRA’s consultant, RKG Associates, will incorporate those greenlighted applications into one of three potential redevelopment plans to be presented at the HLRA’s Aug. 17 meeting. “Our approval or acceptance of an NOI provides direction,” HLRA Chairman W. William Whiteside …

Hatboro Mike, you do raise valid points. And as another person commented back to me on the sister article by Theresa, it is by a technicality I live on the other side of County Line Road. So even though my back yard is literally at the base, I don't have much of a say since I don't even live in Montgomery County. As I said in a comment in the other article, I would hear the drone of the turbo-…   more ›
