'Senior Space' Opens at Warminster Library

A new area gered toward the needs of older patrons was dedicated at the library Wednesday.

The Warminster Township Library opened an area dedicated specifically to the interests and needs of senior citizens Wednesday morning. The alcove, directly to the right of the entrance of the library, features titles focused specifically to the aging population, large print books and a dedicated "senior-friendly" computer station. Adult Services Assistant and Senior Spaces Committee Member JT Trader said this is just the start of what is to come for seniors at the library. "We hope to really expand the offerings for seniors even further," Trader said. "We would like to add more to the large print collection as well as develop a senior-focused periodical section." Ann's Choice Holds Resident Tech Expo

Seniors from Hatboro-Horsham High School helped Ann's Choice residents navigate through computer and phone technology.

Smartphones, Twitter, Facebook, Skype, iPads, Nooks, bits, bytes…all just digital buzzwords used by youth, right? While app-fixation is associated with younger generations, every group of society, including senior citizens, stand to benefit from advances in technology. And there are plenty of resources to help tech savvy-seniors looking to learn.   That’s what the Third Annual Computer Tech Expo at Ann’s Choice showcased Friday.  “The purpose of the Tech Expo was to give residents a brief, hands-on experience with current technologies, and to point them in the direction of learning and using whatever will be useful and interesting to them," said Ann’s Choice resident Dick Blackburn, one of the facilitators of the expo.  “All of our …

Bucks Seniors Warned of Possible Mail Scam

The Bucks County Office of Consumer Protection tells an Ivyland senior to be wary of solicitation mailings.

Q. I live in a community where there are a lot of us seniors.  We try to meet for breakfast twice a month and just had one of our get togethers.  There were a good many of us that received a postcard in the mail that stated “Older Pennsylvanians Eligible for Rebates”.    The notice was concerning the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program.  It went on to say that the income limit has been increased to give more money for us and that we can get a bigger rebate.  It is saying that we are entitled to a yearly rebate check of up to $975. The notice is trying to get us seniors to pay $39 to help us fill out the claim.  I thought I heard where this can be done for free in Bucks County.  Do you know where I can go to find out this information?  J.S., …

Something Old, Something New at Senior Center Craft Show

Dark clouds didn't stop the crowd from checking out the flea market at the Ben Wilson Senior Center over the weekend.

The weather didn't keep hopeful vendors away at the Ben Wilson Senior Center's flea market and craft show this past weekend. The Center has been holding these events twice a year for more than 10 years to raise money for much needed items at the facility. Ivyland residents Peg and Harry Scullion organize the event, making sure both vendors and shoppers are happy. “There are many wonderful volunteers that help with everything,” said Peg Scullion. Proceeds benefit the Senior Center by allowing them to purchase upgrades for the building. This year, Scullion said they desperately need new blinds for the library and arm chairs. Warminster Township owns the building but the Senior Center pays for all of the inside maintenance and upgrades. …

Valentine's Day Can be a Senior Moment

Finding love at any age.

Wisdom does come with age, according to pharmacologist and author, Professor Susan Greenfield. Greenfield states on links2love.com that although our bodies may deteriorate, our minds can develop and our consciousness can deepen as long as we stimulate the brain, which strengthens the networks of connections.  Strengthening these connections can be as easy as finding someone to share your life with, especially in your senior years. Two couples who can attest to this can be found most days at the Ben Wilson Senior Center on Delmont Ave. Pat and Maria DA'Gostino of Hatboro have been married for 53 years. At that time, Pat's family owned a bar called the Bristol Road Manor Bar, where he met Maria, the woman he would soon marry. Maria was …
