Take Our Poll: 70 mph Speed Limit on Turnpike?

State lawmakers might raise the Pennsylvania Turnpike speed limit to 70 miles per hour. Do you support the move?

State lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow the Turnpike Commission to raise the Pennsylvania Turnpike speed limit to 70 miles per hour. The House Transportation Committee recently approved the measure, which would affect sections of both the Northeast Extension and the rest of the turnpike. Supporters of the measure say the change makes sense because vehicles are safer and the turnpike is wider, flatter and straighter thanks to road improvements. There is no timetable for when - or if  - the bill will come to a vote. Turnpike officials say the speed limit change would not be made without additional study and would apply only to some portions of the road. Because the highway runs right through Bensalem, we thought you would …

I just drove to Tennessee for vacation and by far the worst road I drove on was the PA turnpike. the fact that I actually have to pay to drive on it is ridiculous. What are they doing with all that toll money? Not making the turnpike nice to drive. It's horrendous.   more ›

Turnpike Resurfacing at Willow Grove Begins this Month

Nighttime paving, reduced speeds may cause delays between Exits 343-351 until 2013.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists using Interstate 276 between Willow Grove (Exit #343) and Delaware Valley (Exit #358) to be prepared for overnight lane closures with reduced speeds of 40 miles per hour starting later this month. Overnight repaving work will be performed weeknights during off-peak hours until the project is completed in spring 2013. The Turnpike Commission determined it was necessary for customer safety to resurface this section of I-276 and awarded the $12 million project to Glasgow Inc., Glenside, Pa. in Dec. 2011. The contractor anticipates installing advance warning signs and traffic control devices to establish a work zone over the next two weeks, with roadwork to begin before the end of the …

Turnpike Commission Approves 2012 Toll Increase

Cash tolls will increase by 10 percent, with E-ZPass tolls to stay the same.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission approved a 2012 rate plan that includes a 10-percent toll increase for cash-paying customers but no rate increase for those who pay with E-ZPass, according to a release. “Implementing a cash-only toll increase generates the revenue we need to satisfy our annual funding obligation to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and it encourages more travelers to sign up for E-ZPass,” said Turnpike Commission Chief Executive Officer Roger E. Nutt said in the statement. On January 1, 2012, cash rates will be increased by 10 percent. The increase will be applied to all vehicle classes on all turnpike sections in the area. With the new rates, the most-common cash toll for passenger vehicles will increase from $1.10 to…

Road Work to Close Turnpike Early Sunday Morning

Affected area is between Bensalem and Delaware Valley exits.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission cautions motorists that a seven-mile stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike will be closed in both directions for five hours on Sunday, June 12. The closed portion will be between Bensalem (Exit #351) and Delaware Valley (Exit #358) for overnight work to place steel girders on the bridge that carries Bristol Oxford Valley Road over the Turnpike at milepost 357 in Bensalem. At midnight on until 5 a.m. on Sunday, all eastbound traffic must exit at the Bensalem Interchange and westbound traffic will be diverted off at the Delaware Valley Interchange. Additionally, no traffic will be allowed access to the Turnpike system from Street Road (PA 132) using the new Street Road E-ZPass-Only Interchange. The …
