Zero Tolerance for Seat Belt Violations Over Memorial Day Weekend

Drivers can expect roving patrols, safety checkpoints and special attention to seat belt compliance over Memorial Day Weekend.

PennDOT will partner with more than 600 law enforcement agencies and the Pennsylvania State Police to participate in a national “Click It or Ticket” seat-belt enforcement effort from May 20 through June 9. The effort will focus largely on nighttime enforcement, using traffic safety checkpoints and roving patrols. Police will also use Traffic Enforcement Zones, which combine roving patrol and checkpoint tactics on roadways with high numbers of unbuckled crashes. According to PennDOT data, 503 people died last year in unbelted crashes, a decrease from 509 such fatalities in 2011. The total number of crashes in which people were not wearing seat belts also decreased to 15,528, compared to 16,298 in 2011. The majority of enforcement will occur…

County Line Road Bridge Construction Nears Completion

The Jaymor Road/James Way detour will be a thing of the past come next month, according to PennDOT.

Back in January, the Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority began work on a water main replacement project on the portion of County Line Road between Jaymor Road and Huntingdon Pike (Rte 232).   When the project began, officials estimated that the project would be finished by April 6. Despite a few weather-related setbacks, PennDOT says the project appears to be pretty close to following the initial timeline.  PennDOT Community Relations Coordinator Charles Metzger said as of the last update, the BCWSA would be handing over the roadway on April 13, barring no problems. “Weather can affect that date, also when you are digging up stuff you never know what you might find,” he said. “But so far it looks good for the 13th.”  Metzger said once …

Hundreds Gather for Opening of 202 Parkway

After decades of planning and construction, the Route 202 Parkway opened Monday afternoon with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

A collective sigh of relief seemed to emanate from the public officials gathered at the 202 Parkway's ribbon-cutting ceremony on the George Niblock Bridge in Warrington. After decades of planning, shelving of the plans, debates over new plans, funding issues and, finally, construction, the feeling of accomplishment running through the crowd has been a long time coming. Representatives from local, county and state offices gave remarks that held common themes of gratitude at the cooperation among the different parties involved in the planning and execution, and optimism that the new road will bring much-needed relief to traffic congestion between the two sections of Bucks and Montgomery counties. "This road is a model of what can happen when…

It does need to be finished to the NJ border. I think that is the real reason it is only a "Parkway". It has room for more lanes but did not for a reason. The way it was built gives an easier sell to Upper Bucks to allow it to finish. It is a crime that it was not a four lane all the way. But this way we might get the thing finished. Then it will be easier to expand it.   more ›

Effort Focuses on Seat Belt Use, Impaired and Aggressive Driving

The operation is under way, beginning with statewide Click It or Ticket seat-belt enforcement. Through the New Year, police will also use sobriety checkpoints, roving patrols and regular traffic safety patrols to crack down on motorists who are speeding, driving aggressively or driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol. “Every year we see an increase in travel during the holiday season, and unfortunately we also see more crashes,” PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said. “If we all take the simple steps to buckle up, take our …

Why Judge Simpson Delayed Voter ID Law

A look at the injunction against the Voter ID Law.

Judge Robert Simpson issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday morning, halting certain aspects of the Voter ID Law from impacting the November presidential election. While the decision does not repeal the law that requires citizens to show photo identification to vote, if upheld, the ruling allows registered voters to cast ballots without an ID.  To issue an injunction on the law, Simpson was tasked to consider two questions—does the issuance of IDs "comport with liberal access" that the General Assembly required, and will no voter disenfranchisement exist if the law is implemented this fall? Liberal Access? In returning the case to Simpson, the commonwealth's Supreme Court said then-current procedures were "contrary" to liberal access—a …

New Law Adds Penalties To Danger Behind Barricades

Driving around a 'Road Closed' sign could mean a fine and points on your driving record.

It doesn’t take a visit from severe weather systems Leslie or Michael to bring potential flooding or other emergency conditions to the Delaware Valley. And the next time they hit, going around those Road Closed barricades could mean more than the implied danger ahead. A new state law imposing stiff penalties on motorists who ignore “road closed” or other safety warning signs and devices is now in effect, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said this week. Act 114, signed on July 5 by Gov. Tom Corbett, reinforces the critical need for all drivers to obey traffic control signs. The law aims to increase safety for motorists and emergency responders in areas where flooding or other hazardous conditions exist. “Too often, motorists …
