Rita's locations will celebrate the first day of summer tomorrow with $2 Italian ices.
Though it has felt like summer for the past few weeks, Wednesday marks the official start to the season. Willow Dale teachers and staff worked the service window at Rita's to raise money for school programs.
A line of frozen treat fans wrapped around the parking lot at Rita's Thursday night for some tasty desserts dished out by special guest workers. The teachers and staff from Willow Dale Elementary school took turns manning the water ice from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in an effort to raise money for the "Character Counts" program. During those three hours, 15 percent of sales benefitted the school. Franchise owner Dave Cummings estimated that the rush of customers snatched up at least 50 gallons of water ice and custard. "Fortunately, we got our shipment the day before," said Cummings. "I just hope we'll make it to next Wednesday. But it's great to help the schools out." To mark the first day of spring, Rita's will be giving out free Italian Ice March 20.
To celebrate the first day of the spring season, Rita's Italian Ice will be giving away a free, regular size Italian Ice to every guest that stops by a location tomorrow. According to its website, Rita's has been celebrating this first day of spring this way for the past 19 plus years. Last spring, Rita's gave out more than 1.2 million cups of Italian Ice were given away in a ten hour period.
